Mark Gates

Author & Technology Writer at CodeWalkers

About

Mark is the senior technology voice on the CodeWalkers team, with nearly thirty years in the industry and the kind of web background that predates frameworks doing the thinking for you. He started with web design in the mid-1990s, back when HTML in a plain text editor was the standard toolset and a database-backed site meant PHP and MySQL on a LAMP box you administered yourself. He built a web design business in college during the early internet era, expanded it into digital marketing and SEO, and eventually sold it to focus on writing and technology.

In 2017, his bestselling guide to blockchain hit #1 on Amazon in the blockchain category. It made the underlying technology, distributed ledgers, consensus, and the cryptography beneath it, accessible to a mainstream audience, and established Mark as a go-to voice for explaining emerging technologies in plain language.

His approach is the same across all his work: learn by doing, read the primary source, and separate the useful engineering question from the hype around it. That long view is why the PHP, SQL, and database clusters sit naturally with him. He lived through the LAMP era, the framework wars, NoSQL, big data, crypto, and now AI, so novelty has to prove itself before it gets much applause.

At CodeWalkers, Mark brings that philosophy to running local and on-device AI models, machine learning, data sovereignty, privacy, blockchain, PHP, SQL, and emerging technologies. He cares about what runs on your own hardware, what leaves your machine, and whether the database is telling the truth before the application starts improvising.
